DSE 2010 Q 21

Hi! This is pertaining to the 21st question in DSE Exam 2010.

Q. Suppose X1 and X2 are two real valued random variables with f as their common probability density function. Suppose (x1, x2) is a sample generated by these random variables. The expectation of the number of observations in the sample that fall within a specified interval [a,b] is....??
Please see the solutions. There C has been marked as the right option. Please explain the rationale.
