not any...if any one 3by 3 matrix is non zero rank is 3.... all the 3 by 3 matrix have to be zero for rank to be lower than that....best is use echelon method

No Anjali, even if you get one 3x3 matrix whose det is non zero then rank is 3. So you have to calculate the det of every possible 3x3 matrix.

Take any 3 by 3 matrix..suppose
1 2 1
4 4 0
3 6 0

the det of aboveis non zero...so rank is 3

Okay you mean that we have to find a non zero matrix , and if we manage to get even a single 3*3 matrix that is non zero out of all the combinations , then rank will be three . Is it ?

Yes exactly! Now suppose say for all possible 3x3 matrices u obtain the det to be zero. The u can be sure that now the rank is definitely less than 3 but not 3. So begin the same process as before for 2x2 matrices. Got it?

So if suppose there are 6 combinations of 3*3 matrix , and out of them 5 have det has 0 . But only one out of them has a non 0 det . So rank will be 3 ?
