Help needed (new to forum)

Hi guys, I am an engineer by background so having a hard time preparing for DSE. I see that all you guys have a good command over your subjects. Can I ask some general questions?

1) Is solow's model there in the syllabus? I saw a question in 2011 and then 2009 but never again. Can I skip it? How important is it?

2) I am having a bad time with stats. I have absolutely no idea about regression but quite good with conventional mathematics. I wish to know how hard you find the maths questions? Do they come easily like eco to you guys?

3) Can you please suggest a good strategy for the exam day? What according to you is a good score to clear the exam?

A good strategy is never to put your pencil on OMR sheet unless you are confident enough to even bet your life. Negative marking can easily take you below 40. In my case, i erased one of my answer just 5 seconds before my sheet was due taken and and i think that decision ensured me a seat here as cut offs went very low and all the enggs that i know at D-School are all smart guys, they are from same background as you are and they find absolutely no difficulty on an average and doing just fine as guys from DU. So, work hard and have fun :)

DSE can ask you anything. So, its better not to leave anything.
Rest its upto you..Also it shouldnt be the case that you've read everything but you dont know how to apply it..And you can refer Gujarati to get some hold on the basics of Econometrics.
And dont be so much bothered about what others know. Try to focus on your preparation.
Best strategy is to maintain the cool.. Stay calm.. Relaxed state of mind is very important.. :)

an imp ques: can we fill the bubbles with pencil?
i always thought omr sheets are to be filled wth blue/black ball point pen
and what was the cut off at your time for dse?

i filled my OMR sheet with pencil and it makes lot of sense when negative marking can go so high :P
I attempted for 49 marks and my gut feeling was that question paper is hard (i find it hard, actually lots of ecotrix) and so must be true for others. I cross checked my answers later and my estimates were around 43 marks. Cut off touched 40 or very near to it. So, even without solving half of question paper, but still it was good enough to be in top 120  . That's DSE exam  :)

well, i just came to know that growth economics professor is on admission committee. So, it's not a bad assumption that growth questions will be there. SO, brush up your harrod-domar and solow model. Cheers

1)can one use elimination method to answer ques ??

2) in past papers , i found that sometimes all options were incorrect . what should be done in this case ? should one mark d nearest option or leave it ?

3 ) while solving paper , did you find that where was less time ? how was d time pressure and what kind of atmosphere was in d exam hall ?

you can use elimination as one of the strategy. But again, be very careful. I gave my exam with the intention of doing only those questions which i am sure i can solve them 110%. Rest i knew were too risky for me. So, i checked my answers again and again, so i don't think you will find time pressures. If you score around 60 in the exam, my guess is you will be easily in top 20 and to get 60 marks, you don't have to attempt to score 80 coz negative marking will do it's wonder. so, be cool and calm , avoid negative marking plus seats are reasonably good in numbers, so if you feel paper is tough even after studying hard, then even 42-43 will secure you a seat. And i am sure they will give you those questions so that you score that far coz they don't want 40-50 empty seats in college. where people do wrong is not knowing where lies the red line. I think i have said enough and will only be repeating myself(i think i already have :P).
Since i have an engineering background, so large no of gals at the entrance was a bit shocking for me, the rest was kool. :)

just drop your mail here. i'll send you the notes which we referred for our course. It's bit lengthy but it's good. or you can download from google from any good US university. try solving problem sets from MIT, Berkeley and Harvard. you have two days to go, you can do that much!!

I am an engineer and starting the prep for DSE entrance. My primary question is, do we need to enroll for a online coaching class, like that of ecopoint or is the textbook and the associated problem sets enough?
