Isn't DSE or ISI masters enough for top Ph.D. programs in USA?

XIPP
This post was updated on .
I am wondering why best alumni of DSE had to have more degrees before entering reputed Ph.D.s in USA.

See, Harvard University Econ. Professor Gita Gopinath had to have Masters from Univ. of Washington(Gita Gopinath CV) before she could enter Princeton.

Princeton Professor Dilip Abreu had to have M.Phil. from Oxford before entering Princeton(Abreu's CV).

I want to have Ph.D., but am nervous because I don't want to "waste" so many years earning it.

Please give me advice as I am going to enter(perhaps) DSE or ISI next year and wish to be in good doctoral program by the end of 2016.

xipp......ur saying dat u've done bcom in undergraduation...r u sure u r elligible for masters in eco from isi??? i think dse has an option open to all but isi does not take commerce graduates.
isi's elligibilty criteria is:
 3-year Bachelor's degree in Economics/Mathematics/Statistics/
Physics
check out isi's elligibilty criteria from there admission notice

Thanks for taking trouble for me. But as I asked earlier on this forum, Amit Sir replied positively.

Also, when I called personally ISI(Delhi), they told me that B. Com. is OK.

But, still I am fearing!

Hi.

I am a B.Com Hons graduate looking at Econ programs too.

Firstly, its true that the Commerce background works against most of the reputed masters programs in the UK or elsewhere in Europe.

Second, ISI, to my knowledge, does not admit B.Com students. But if you have spoken to them, that is cool.

Lastly, a strong masters is almost a must to enter Ph.D programs in the US. So that leaves just DSE and ISI to give you a shot. Even then, as you mention, it does not work always.

Are you appearing for June 2014?

Oh, i wasn't aware of that.

In terms of level of difficulty, i presume ISI is tougher than DSE right. And that for a non-Economics student too.
