Hi...I would love your opinion to decidde on wether to go for one or the other..? The uncertain thing about IGIDR is that the degree is in Development studies(although all the people on the list are MA eco people)...
So here is my decision weights reputation=0.25 how it help help me secure a teaching job=0.25 course structure =.25 location=.25 (delhi gets 5 and mumbai gets 2.5) Please rate them on the scale of 0 to 5...0 being poor and 5 being great..thanks |
hello kangkan, well i would say that though u r talking in very mathematical terms... i would rather write my opinion in words only
--the thing is being a delhite i knw what delhi means to ppl like us, u can take my example, a DU graduate had to move to Punjab for 2 years to do masters; and even being a sardarni, i found it really hard to study and adjust there for two years, coz i really missed my lovely city and frnds and family here.., here, i would also like to quote a famous saying ''comfort zone is good but nothing really grows over there'' , yes, ppl who get what they want at a place they want are lucky, but believe that god has kept every good thing for others in some or other way. You cant always have best of both worlds. Pls dont mind here. :) -- Now coming to course, see for MA jnu sss is really good, even better than MSc igidr if u want to go to academia. But here we are comparing masters at both places. But u hv a choice between Mphil(a higher level than masters) and masters, so just a city cant be a deciding or comparing factor. Also, i know you are a very intelligent and capable person(ps- i have been following this forum from quite some time ) but u cant always be sure that you will get admission in Mphil/Phd again whee currently you have got after two years. I think you should go for Mphil,. Tell me how many ppl get a chance to research on dev studies topics at such a prestigious institute. IGIDR is really a very good place for research oriented ppl located in the financial capital. Its faculy is really well known. Plus u get to work with amazing organization even when you are research student there. JNU looses a point in this case. You dont get to work while you are research scholar. They dont allow that. This is what i have heard from one of my teachers. --And one more thing, dev. studies are definately related to eco, in fact applications of economics in a country like India deal with development aspects majorly, so u should also see ur interests, , ie , if u want to do research in pure eco subjects(go for MA SS JNU then and after that Mphil in pure eco) or if u r interested in researching abt developmental aspects(which have more wide choices than pure eco research topics) using statistical tools and your economic knowledge. I have gone through igidr mphil course on their website and i feel it is really a good one, that even i am thinking to go for dev eco research and applying there next year. One of my teachers said that in countries like India, development eco as more need and relevance than any other stream of economics. --Plus u hv choice between :- if u want to go for lectureship in pure eco subjects or developmental eco . Here i would suggest you to talk to to current PHD scholars and teachers in IGIDR. I guess you must have sen, their nos. have been given on the site. I have a teacher in my Masters, who did all his studies in dev. eco. after grad, but he teaches env. eco and macro eco to undergrad students and dev. eco to masters student. So, its better to talk to teachers in IGIDR (who are experienced than us on this matter) that u can get a lecturereship job in eco or not after IGIDR All the beat for your choice. :) |
Thanks Gkaur for taking out time to write such a detailed reply....i was really split between the two...i am little concerned about IGIDR because the site says the Phil/program is in DEvelopment studies...i am really scared that after 5 yrz,if i find myself ineligible for economic teaching postions..i would be back to square one..but IGIDR obviously scores over JNU in terms of placements and infrastructure...i am really conflicted..head says IGIDR and hrt says JNU....i always thought of myself as the rational kind..but
|
well in that case i suggest you talk to experienced persons like amit sir, and talk directly to teachers at IGIDR and also teachers at DU (coz eventually i guess your aim is to be a professor at DU, so no better guidance can be sought but from DU profs)

Some of my friends have even chosen igidr msc over dse. Clearly there is something in the college. Anyways there is not much difference between delhi and mumbai. Igidr is a chilled out place and their infrastructure, especially hostel is much better when compared with dse/jnu.
And mphil/phd is valued anyday over masters. People go for igidr mphil/jnu after jnu or dse too. So there clearly seems no comparison. All the best! |
See, mphil IS where you get to choose which stream of eco you want to specialize in.
all our professors.. they wouldn't really be where they are now, unless they hadn't actually picked up something that interested them marginally ( or considerably ) at mphil/ phd stage. so i'd say, if right now, you feel there is anything else you may want to do more than development studies- well, go for masters and make that decision two years from now. (but personally, i'm inclined towards igidr mphil. great place. i have no idea what in good heavens went wrong with my M. Sc interview, it would have definitely been my choice. had I dug up a lil more, and known their mphil is open to B.A. students, i would've definitely applied as well. anyway, bygones.) good luck! you'll do great kangkan! :) |

If it had been a comparison between Phd from JNU vs IGIDR, then JNU would've been a clear winner for me. Some people prefer JNU as it offers a lot of freedom on how you want to go about your research. Even in the masters course JNU offers only elective courses in the second year. You're absolutely free to choose among them. There are no compulsory courses. This is probably the reason that you'll see esteemed alumni from JNU in fields of politics and economics. Some people also like the inter-disciplinary interaction among students that JNU has to offer which is particularly helpful if you're going into research.
Also if you'd check out faculty from DSE or JNU then you'll see a lot of professors and asst. professors that have done their Phd from JNU. Another advantage of JNU over IGIDR is where the colleges are located. Not just Delhi vs Mumbai. The IGIDR campus is a bit remotely located. The comparison of the MA vs Mphil/Phd course makes it a difficult choice though. I would've gone for JNU. |

Hello gkaur!
I need some help in decision making. I have been Working as asst.manager in State bank of India with a package of say 8 lakhs ctc. And I am 32 years old. I have done masters in engineering in electronics. After working in bank I realized that I am very much inclined towards economics. I cleared both JAIIB and CAIIB with flying colours. Now I am thinking that I should move to teaching or research in economics or allied fields in India or abroad. I want to appear for 2015 entrance for mphil/phd from IGIDR? Can you tell me how to prepare for the entrance exam? |
Is it right to start mphil / phd at this age?
With already a job in govt organization? |

Thank you for your reply vandita!
I worked as asst.prof in some engineering colleges before joining in bank as asst manager. I am more interested in economics rather than engineering for further studies. hence I haven't turned up for phd in engineering. I found this only after joining in bank. Can you guide me how to prepare for the entrance exam? |
Phd in economics gives many opportunities to you.
Not only a teaching job in Indian universities but also major banks in India and abroad recruit them as quant analyst, vp analytics etc.. We can also go for research positions in IMF, ADB etc.. post docs in good universities abroad etc.. The opportunities are not limited. |
Kangan, vandita I think u both finally cracked the
mphil / phd exam last year. Can u guide me for the preparation of written test? |
Hi, I did get an offer but i didnt join..i joined JNU instead. For preparation, just do Maths from Hammond and Chiang..the rest is english and all, which is something that you can take as you go.. but for the interview, you have to present an original research idea On Sun, Jan 11, 2015 at 2:54 PM, Varun.07 [via Discussion forum] <[hidden email]> wrote: Kangan, vandita I think u both finally cracked the |

Thank you kangan for your reply!
I think you have noticed my profile. Does my profile suits to mphil/PhD in economics? |
I found both the text books in Amazon India.
