Hi All,
I am new to forum and this is my first post. If you don't wanna read my intro then please skip this para. I did my B.Tech in Computer Science from NIT Trichy (2008-12). Since around mid-2013, I developed an interest in general economy like reading basic economy news stuff. Then I learnt about game theory on coursera, just loved it. However, I was not so much into core economics discipline until March 2014 when based on a random suggestion I applied to masters programmes of ISI, IGIDR and JNU (ISI on the last date)! I started reading/solving Varian Intermediate Micro from 2nd week of March which itself took about 6 weeks (alongwith job). Then I read Macro from Dornbusch and Fischer which took another month. But, by then IGIDR, ISI and JNU exams were over and as expected I did not qualify in ISI and IGIDR (not very hopeful of JNU either). Nonetheless, I was not entirely dissatisfied with my results; IGIDR - cleared overall cut-off but missed Econ cut-off by 1 mark (that sucks bcoz the cut-off was just 6) and ISI - I'm pretty sure I cleared first paper but flunked in the second (did only 1.5 questions).
I know good economics research institutions in India like ISI/DSE/JNU/CSSS/IGIDR but my confusion is regarding their eligibility. Do these institutes admit students directly from B.Tech to PhD? Coming to foreign universities, I did some research on top 20-30 universities and their requirements. I've done 2 terms of mathematics (that included linear algebra and some real analysis and multivariate calculus) ans 1 term of probability and statistics. Scored grade A (90% or higher) in those and overall CGPA of 8.36. But my profile isn't a stellar one, e.g. I've no extra-curricular except school elocution and college cricket (w/o certi :P), I can't ask for a reco from my college profs as I used to screw them a lot.
If I clear JNU, I'll join it. If not, then I don't want to drop for a masters degree. I can work hard for PhD entrance or GRE, but given my situation as above, I would like to have your valuable suggestions on next course of action or how to build my profile further to secure world top universities' admit.
