Re: TERI vs JAMIA plz help

mphil
Hey Sri ...ihad the same question in mind some years back.i deposited the first amount of 50,000 at Teri but it got waste bcoz I didn't take admission in Teri ..during the first day f counselling I realised it is much environment oriented which made me think that with such a specialization I would hve my choices restricted in India.i saw the course structure which I think was not good as jamia.its TRUE Teri used to hve a brand value when it was Tata env research institute but now it is the env research institute
also, the competition there is not much among students... but they make U write dissertation by the end f sem which  jamia doesnot !
As far as jamia is considered I hve written much bout it under cds vs jamia..hve a look.
placement at Teri is ok like jamia.

MPhil what will you say about the faculty at Teri?? I've heard that the faculty has changed in 2012. Any idea how's the new faculty? Also, one prof. Debdutta Saha (PhD from ISI) has also left this year!!??

See ,during my time i had the same confusion .i asked two people .through somebody i asked Prof Jayati Ghosh of jnu ..so she said dis exactly" both institutes are at par ...both are good .lots of my students are teaching at Teri"...i also asked nishant sir at ecopoint he advised me not to take admission in
Teri ,he has not mentioned the institute name n his site ...acc to him it is not worthy to spend this much for masters if one does not hve job security.
faculty wise teri is much better than jamia ,U can easily compare their profiles.
Course content wise jamia is better.
i am not passing any vague comments U check site n confirm
As far restricting opportunities is concerned i had the following questions in mind
Will i be eligible for ugc net ? After msc in env eco ?
Will i be eligible for ies n RBI ?
since env eco is a new sub discipline of economics which is not that popular in India i was not sure about the job prospects this subject offers...
people from teri do get placed at wwf, unep, undp, institute of eco growth but the institutes/organisations offering them project/job is less in India...if U think there are many institutes pls update nd correct my misconceptions if i hve any regarding this subject ...

Yeah!! I hv taken admission in general eco.
Since you are interested in academics then there is no harm in joining environment eco. faculty is good and mse is a good place for environment eco.. it's not tht costly like Teri.  I hv gone through the syllabus and faculty profiles at mse website.. i didn't find anything wrong... But at the end of the day u hv to decide.. coz ur self interest matters a lot...

Re: TERI vs JAMIA plz help

Hey d.kalra I am working as a project associate with ministry of human resource n dev .i did not sit for placement ,my aim is mphil / phd for which i ll b giving entrances nxt year .
I hve studied env economics as my optional paper in my masters...we focussed mainly on valuation part .we had two papers env 1n env 2.
I dont hve much info as far as mse faculty is concerned ask someone who is convinced enough to take admission there ...for me staying in madras was difficult
nd its good if U are eligible for net  etc...my poor info in dis point

Hi Deepasna !

See first you have to decide that which subjects you would like to take up if you enter teaching line. Environment is definitely not a major part in DU , but Env Eco has a lot of welfare economics involved. So , if you are keen on teaching at DU , then Public Economics could be a suitable subject for you. If not DU , then all esteemed universities/institutes have an environment department ( like IIT , JNU etc ). And if not there , then you may try your luck at TERI , they pay really well.

As far as MSE is concerned , most of their teachers have a specialization in environment. See if you are specializing in environment , then it doesn't mean that there is nothing else left for you to study. You can always make fusions ( environment , development , agriculture , apply some econometrics for estimating your model , game theory etc etc ) - that all depends how innovative you can be. And you are eligible to teach anything , like econometrics , game theory , public economics , provided you have a good hold on them.

Somewhere , I guess , we are sailing in the same boat. It was not easy for me to come to a firm decision , with minimal knowledge of the future prospects at my disposal. But , a big thanks to @Anirudh and @Akshay , who helped and edified me in coming to a conclusion. Rest , I have really stopped bothering myself with any further tension.
