financial is their flagship course.. but i agree with you its scope is quite limited.. u can't shift to research or academics.. i dun think it will help much for mphil or phd, if we wish to do that later..

After Fin Econ you could go for a corporate job as the placement at GIPE are quite decent. Else you can do a MRes/PhD in Finance after this from various universities offering this course such as LSE. Or you can also pursue a professional degree like CFA which will further provide you an edge. Cheers!

Hope to see you at GIPE! :)

@ISI agent: you have joined gokhale for which course? i've joined for financial eco. do you have any idea about how their placements are? are you aware of any figures for fin eco? average placement, highest placement, percentage of students getting placed? i don't have any clue about the placement scenario hence i'm a little apprehensive about it. i don't even know which companies come for placements there. do u have any idea at all?

My first preference both at GIPE and MSE was Fin Econ. Mainly because Finance is what interest me the most. Comparing Fin Econ and General Econ is like to compare apples and oranges. Go through the curriculum and decide which subjects interest you.

I had a word with a teacher at GIPE, she was like the placement for first batch was around 70% (many students didn't sit for the placements) and the other went for higher studies. The course is designed according to the financial sector as there was demand in the market for such course. And we'll have an advantage because industry already know about this course so placements will incessantly increase.

Placements for General Econ is mostly in NGO, development and policy sector while for Fin Econ it's corporate sector. Fin Econ has comparatively higher placements. So, first chill and take a deep breath. Then take a decision with an open mind and don't regret it later on. Life at GIPE is amazing, I'm sure we all are going to have super duper fun for the next 2 years.

Hope this helps. :)

I just have one question! Can we sit for Indian Economic Services after Fin Econ? Help me if you have any idea. Cheers! (Y)

Thanks ISI agent. I have a friend at gipe studying financial economics currently in her second year there. and she's preparing for IES along with it. that has always been her aim. I guess she must have Done some research before joining so I'm assuming u can go for IES after financial eco.

@ISI agent: since youre interested in finance, I was hoping you would be able to clear some doubts of mine. why aren't you going for MBA in finance? the financial eco courses in india are not really at par with those in lse, Warwick etc. and MBA in finance would give you an opportunity to work at managerial positions above those occupied by fin eco students. after fin eco you can generally work as an analyst while MBA will open up much greater opportunities. so why have u chosen financial eco instead of MBA in finance? I'm only asking this as I'm also interested in finance and I've taken admission in fin eco in gipe but I'm having second thoughts about it. I'm wondering if I should have gone for MBA in finance.  kindly share your views. would really appreciate any point of view.

IES! Whew, that's a relief! :)

I knew I was going to get something like this. Well, MA fin eco gives you an edge over those applying for MBA in fin from top MBA institutes. I'm going to ask you a simple question, who will be preferred by IIMA/B/C. A graduate or a person with a masters in fin eco? Answering this gives you your answer. Do MA fin eco-> sit for a placement-> work for 2-3 years-> apply for MBA (Stanford, Harvard, etc) and if you get through, you are set for life!

You have to plan from day one to achieve something like this! All the best. :)
