3.1 (0) Charlie likes both apples and bananas. He consumes nothing else.
The consumption bundle where Charlie consumes xA bushels of apples per year and xB bushels of bananas per year is written as (xA; xB). Last year, Charlie consumed 20 bushels of apples and 5 bushels of bananas. It happens that the set of consumption bundles (xA; xB) such that Charlie is indierent between (xA; xB) and (20; 5) is the set of all bundles such that xB = 100/xA. The set of bundles (xA; xB) such that Charlie is just indierent between (xA; xB) and the bundle (10; 15) is the set of bundles such that xB = 150/xA. answer to one of the problems- For each of the following statements about Charlie's preferences, write \true" or \false.": (20; 5) >= (10; 10). is given as true. Aren't the averages preferred to the extremes? please reply asap thanks :) |
Charlie's utility function takes the form U = xAxB.
So, (20,5) and (10,10) lie on the same indifference curve. And you are right that averages are preferred to extremes for his preferences. Note that the first bundle has more goods than the second bundle. In spite of this, Charlie is indifferent between the two. |
@bats
Do u mean to say we will neglect the convexity(avg. preferred to extreme) because the no. of units are greater in 20,5 compared (10,10) ? Thank you :) |
Not exactly. I was simply trying to give an intuitive explanation. As a counter-example take an example of the bundle (20,1). It contains more goods than (10,10), but is still less preferred. So, you can't neglect convexity because the total amount of goods are more.
If this is confusing you, ignore what I said in the previous post. The assumption of convexity implies that any bundle which is the weighted average of two bundles on the same indifference curve is at least as good as either of the two bundles. I think you're assuming that this means that bundles that are located towards the centre are always preferred more? For instance (9,10) is not preferred to (100,1) according to Charlie's preferences, even though it has a more equal amount of both goods. |
All right! i think i have got it. thank you ! :D
That 9,10 and 100,1 bundle dont even lie on the same IC in the case u cited so no point in applying convexity principle. no? . so here obviously we would choose 100,1 cause the utility would be 100 compared to 90 so a higher IC! thanks bats! |
Yes. Or at least, that's my understanding.
