information regarding perperation.

kaustubh
hii friends,
I am Kaustubh, i have completed my btech this year from iit in electrical engineering. I am interested in persuing my career in the field of economics but i have some doubts . Please clarify them.
My first doubt is that many people are saying that you should not waste your iit degree. So, kindly tell me are there enough good job oppurtunities in this field??.
My second doubt is that I was searching for coaching institutes which can guide me thourgh the entrance tests and i found only one '' ecopoint'' . Also, i noticed that some of the succesful students whom the institue was claiming as their students are also the active members in this forum. So, please kindly give me the feedback about the coaching institute .
At last, please give me some tips on how to plan my preperation and check the progress as i am planning to give the tests next year and i am in tremendous pressure to crack them as i have not taken any job and decided to have full time preperation for these entrance tests and upsc exam.
Finally congrats to those who have cleared the entrance exams this year and joined the prestigious institutes in the country.

Hi
you should not think of studying economics at masters level as wasting IIT degree. There are Noble Laureates in economics who did not study Economics in their undergraduate.
Second, i don't know what's your preference UPSC or MA ECO. And i think six months are sufficient to clear DSE or ISI.

Sure. I think Amit Goyal sir conducts classes. He can certainly help you in preparation. Unfortunately, i don't have his number but it must be somewhere on this site. Good Luck

Incidentally, this year's batch has atleast 3 or 4 electrical engineers and 2 people are from IIT! If economics is of interest to you, nothing wrong in switching to this stream! 2-3 months of preparation should be good enough. Do Varian + Varian workbook (definitely can be done on your own!). I also see coursera.org offering some econ courses, which I'm doubly sure, will be of help! For macro, I'd recommend starting off with Mankiw, but looking to say, Macro economic theory by Branson, for a slightly more mathematical (and slightly more extensive) treatment. Try doing questions from the MIT OCW courses. Some universities in the US also have a lot of their assignments out in the open. Google's your best bet.

You won't have too much of a problem with Math and Stat (look at prev year papers. More than enough of them around!). Also, going by the trend over the past 3 years, there are a significant number of questions from econometrics. Some online lectures (Khan academy, Yale lectures on Udemy etc) and other websites should help you out with that.

Good luck!
