no, they don't! junior research fellowship (JRF) is of 16,000 per month only. that too if you have cleared the UGC exam. besides universities have different things to offer to their research scholars.
Research is basically working on a topic chosen by you (in actuality, by your guide) over a period of 3-5 years. Maybe more (depends on you). it can be full time- where you go to your department everyday. or part time; where you need not.
What you should see is whether you have the aptitude for it or not, besides not all universities have good research opportunities. so be careful with your choice. If you don't, DON'T get stuck in it. Most of the research scholars I have met are frustrated.
