probability

prasidhi
In an hour, a bacteria dies with probability p or else splits into two. What is the probability that a single bacteria produces a population that will never become extinct?
a) 1+p/1-p
b) 1-2p/1-p
c) 1/1-p
d) None of the above

You draw 4 cards from the regular deck of 52 cards.
What is the chance that all of these cards have different denom-inations and in addition there is no neighbors (for example an 8 and a 9, a 10 and a Jack, or a king and an ace are neighbors, but a 7 and a 9, or an ace and a 2 are not neighbors)?
a) 1/5
b) 1/4^4
c) 1500/7000
d) 1536/7735

Re: probability

being extinct the probability for infinite horizon....p + p^2 + p^3 +....upto infinity.....p(1/1-p).....not being extinct....1-(p/1-p)=1-2p/1-p.....plz verify
