See, mphil IS where you get to choose which stream of eco you want to specialize in.
all our professors.. they wouldn't really be where they are now, unless they hadn't actually picked up something that interested them marginally ( or considerably ) at mphil/ phd stage.
so i'd say, if right now, you feel there is anything else you may want to do more than development studies- well, go for masters and make that decision two years from now.
(but personally, i'm inclined towards igidr mphil. great place. i have no idea what in good heavens went wrong with my M. Sc interview, it would have definitely been my choice. had I dug up a lil more, and known their mphil is open to B.A. students, i would've definitely applied as well. anyway, bygones.)
