i do..
i recently got in contact to a few seniors in gipe and mse and everybody knows for a fact that mse is overrated and is fast degarding.. the point is if mse is worth suffering 2 years in madras ,especially for sm1 like me whos frm delhi...i think the answer is no..i knw a couple of guys who got decently placed after gen eco in gipe and they say that plcmnts in gen eco are decent in both places.. Madras is said to hav a upper hand in faculty but many of the best ones haav left the place.. Thats my take if that helps |
And at the end of the day neither of them is dse or igidr,,thats what everybody says

Yep, the rest depends on what you make of the opportunities out there. Plus its not at the level of ISI, DSE, JNU or IGIDR that i find it worth it to head to south and adjust.

Okay, I'm a student of MA Economics in GIPE and there is a lot of confusion here regarding the different institutes.
First of all, don't compare colleges like commodities. A college would never ever determine your future. It's a fact. It's completely and wholly upto your capability, and all of you should know that by now. On the misconceptions regarding placements, let me burst your bubble. DSE placements are great, but there's a lot of competition and the average placement is at best, average. Very few people get placed in plum companies like PwC and Goldman Sachs, Nomura and the likes. I have friends in all institutes, and let me tell you, each one of them is exceptionally great, depending on how much you want to extract out of them. Delhi School of Economics is extremely rigorous, and many of my friends who secured a sub 40 rank are now having backs in subjects. One doesn't get time to explore the world of economics relative to other colleges. The class strength is also very large, so personal interaction with the faculty is at best limited. Now after bursting that bubble, good news is that colleges like GIPE and MSE can help in your career sometimes more than DSE can. Both of them are very similar with the quality of students and there are really smart people in both. You'll get ample time to study the subject as well as time to develop your hobbies and personalities which is the most important part of one's college life(Stop going after packages and hone yourself first). Pune as a city is brilliant and trust me they are going to be the two best yearss of your life and you won't regret it at all. The faculty , some is good , some bad, but that's for all places including DSE(excluding IGIDR JNU and ISI :P) But now we're in that stage where faculty can only guide, rest we have to do ourselves. Many of GOkhale passouts have done really well, and have passed JRF, IES, GRE , IAS, placements and anything depending on his calibre. So chill about the college, Keep calm and study economics! |
Fab GIPE !!
I really hope that your post ends this dilemma of "what" is best. A very genuine piece of information , I must say
"Once you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, no matter how improbable, must be the truth."

Very True!! I have been telling the same thing... Most of d members here are very confused because they don't have confidence on their respective potential... They are more interested in talking about placements and which college is good or bad... Ignoring their own interest and potential...

thank you (esp GIPE) for your helpful comments on this post.
i have been struggling with the same gipe v/s mse choice for the past several days. i see that i can safely avoid going to chennai for the counselling on 14th. but a harder choice i have to make now is between gen eco @GIPE and dev eco @SAU, until other results are out. i have been through both their course structures. if i could please have opinions on which of SAU and GIPE could offer a more wholesome learning experience in terms of both acads and otherwise. (i'm from delhi) thanks |
Hey ps.
Well, it completely dependent on you on what you prefer. But If I were to select, I would select GIPE. A couple of reasons. 1. General Economics is Generic and you get a holistic view of Economics while Devt Economics would restrict you. If you intend to give exams like NET, then Gokhale would provide a more wholesome education to you. I don't know about SAU, but the thing with course structures is that they can look good on paper, but what happens in practice is entirely random. 2. Even I am from Delhi and I got through SAU and GIPE. I chose GIPE. If you're from Delhi and have always stayed in Delhi, why would you still want to be in Delhi? Hostel experience is something I guess every college student should experience, and Gokhale's hostel life is very vibrant, but you have to be disciplined to study on your own. The D.R. Gadgil library there is one of the best in the country(not talking about economics textbooks, but journal articles). Also, Gokhale is an age old institution, since 1932. People in Maharashtra respect GIPE a lot, sometimes to the point outsiders make you feel like celebrities. All the best!! |
