x= Number of hours spent in gathering Coconuts(C)If you consider the case when
x<= 8then x=L=12 and C=x=12
This implies U= min{C,L} = 12
But when
x>8we're getting x=11.2 and L=C=12.8
Therefore, U = 12.8
Note: Sorry, there is an error in the previous post dated 17June,2010.Correct Solution:
When x>8 , we have
=> C= 8+3(x-8)/2 [Its given]
=> 3x- 8= 2C
We also know x+L = 24 and as the utility function is U=min{L,C} , So we have L=C
Therefore, we'll get L=C= 12.8 and x=11.2
