Hi Nam
Gokhale is a good choice if you are aiming at UPSE. One of my friends was in Gokhale and she told me that it offers the highest no of choices in subjects . Infact , one of our forum members , Tsuki ( alias Homer Simpson ) has chosen GIPE over MSE . I guess she is also research oriented .

thnx gayyam and anjali...
m also thinking on the same lines...coz i thnk that broadly placement is the only criterion that separates both the institutes...there isnt much difference otherwise... |

You mean UPSC?
Btw you'd be going for IES or other civil services? Because I'm thinking on the same lines, and at times it feels like going for masters might be a waste of 2 years. |

Hey Nam, i would suggest you take up MSE instead of gokhlae. Its not just a matter of placements, the faculty, studying environment , curriculum is much much better in MSE. And if cracking the upsc exam is your goal then you should definitely go for MSE because it gives you a wholesome environment and also the library of MSE is one of the best. Ive also heard that some teachers in MSE provide special guidance to students who either want to go for further research or crack upsc exams.
This much is what ive heard from my brother who is a MSE passout . Rest is upto you. All the best :) |
Oshii what course did your brother do in MSE and in which year? Also can you ask him if we do Financial Economics or Applied Quantitative Finance then what will be written on the degree.. simply msc economics or the name of the specialization is also written?
|
Hey Nupur , My brother passed out last year. He did Gen economics. He is saying that his degree says- MSc in gen economics but he thinks that obviously your specialisation would be mentioned in the degree

my score is 75..what are my chances of getting general eco at MSE?
|
Is it better to drop a year or go to MSE ? For sure ill be giving DSE again next year. On 11 Jul 2014 13:18, "Nam [via Discussion forum]" <[hidden email]> wrote:

Hey! If you really want to sit for DSE next year then there is no harm in joining MSE this year because there is no surety of getting admission in DSE given that stupid Reservation system. If you join MSE you can do preparation of DSE side by side and curriculum of 1st year at MSE will help you in better understanding of concepts so I think you would be better prepared for the next year DSE entrance. If by chance you don't get admission in DSE then you will not have anything to lose but if you drop MSE just for DSE next year then it will be more riskier....
So choice is your.... |

Nam I guess this debate of MSE v/s GIPE is endless . So you better go through the course structure of both of them , and then decide that where you can prepare well for UPSC ! Both institutes are more or less the same.
Good Luck !

I would like to add one more point that on forum a discussion took place regarding JNU SSS v/s DSE from the perspective of UPSC. So preferences have been revealed in favour of JNU because its course curriculum is more compatible with civil services preparations. DSE is definitely on the top , however one always makes a choice considering his own constraint. I quoted this example to assure you that all institutes are good , you just have to weigh your benefits against the cost. MSE is mostly known for its placements , however , putting forth the real picture , the faculty is average. My friend is in MSE in her second year (batch 2013-2015) , and she says that the institute is fine , nothing extraordinary . The faculty is just okay , and some adhocs are too bad. Placements are for sure there , but some companies , prefer only and only people from financial or AQF . Lastly , Chennai has a really hot weather !
Gokhale on the other hand is known for the numerous subjects that it offers . Now , that can be helpful for UPSC's preparations . And yes , Pune has a wonderful weather !! So ultimately , both are more or less same , but yes , you have to decide that overall which one suits you the best ( just go through the respective syllabus once , that will surely help ) .
