GIPE vs MSE

vaibhavR
So guys, assuming I get shortlisted for MSE too ( my score is 75) .. I need to decided where to drop the money, and it only can be one of them... till the other results come out.

Here is what my perception as of now:

Comparing solely on the basis of Course Structure, I feel MSE have a clear edge... the course structure of GIPE seems kinda a hotch potch to me.. with no clear idea as to what actually they are trying to teach.

On the other hand, as I gather, GIPE enjoys better reputation owing to the fact that it is an age old institution while MSE is still kinda new.

BUt neverthless, it seems to be growing with a really good rate.. and I get a feeling that the people running it a are putting in a lot of quality efforts.

Chennai weather SUCKS .....

Please do add your views here ..... and also any idea when CUTN/MSE will announce shortlist or any kinda further information ...

Hi Vaibhav
GIPE is older and more reputed, the environment is more academic. Fees are rather steep though, compared to other MA courses. But placements are comparable.

Considering, however, that you are extremely likely to get into MSE, perhaps you should talk to some students/seniors and get their inputs. You don't want any regrets later on  Did you get an interview call for IGIDR?

Re: GIPE vs MSE

yeah I did .... that another thing .. I also need to decide on my itinerary, since i'll be in Mumbai till 28th and there is no use coming back If I need to be in Pune on 2nd... so I'll have to make those arrangements too ..

thats why I need to decide whether to go to Pune or not !!!

When i was in first year, i went to IIT chennai for shaastra. And i would say whole Chennai is sucidial. And certainly chennai is not a place where a young man in his prime would aspire to go to. :P

Lol, guys this is a matter of career. Do not put comfort first. It is worth staying in a bad place if it gives your career a kickstart. Think in the long run  Like students at BITS Pilani have such a bad geographical environment, but they don't choose BITS Goa over Pilani just because of that. You're not going to be either in Pune or Chennai forever. Only 2 years. So choose well

hahhaha,

Yeah exactly me thinks.

Well excluding the young man in the prime, the shitty weather still is a thing to consider while making the decision.
Chinni, what all you said is perfectly true... but I was there in Chennai for 3 days in this March, and trust me .... those were 3 days of agony. And that too in March.

See, all this is still till other results come out.

I guess what I am trying to know is ... which one is better.. specially in prospects for higher education.

Re: GIPE vs MSE

vaibhavR
Hey Guys, just got this from a GIPE alumni :

" Congrats. I had the same difficult choice to make between MSE and
GIPE. I would say it depends on your interests. For instance, if you
have corporate ambitions, it's MSE, hands down, don't think twice.
However, if you have research interests, then there are a few teachers
at GIPE that can really help you like Apte Sir and Maharatna Sir.
I'll be brutally honest with you about GIPE. There's no such thing
called 'academic atmosphere' there. There are many spoilt brats from
Delhi whose life's ambition is to work for a KPO. Hostel life is
miserable. No matter how hard you try, it will be difficult for
someone who's serious about studies to study in the hostel. It's
anarchy. Don't get me wrong, the freedom is awesome, but people are
messed up. I can give you references. Placements are hopeless, really
bad, unless you are OK with KPOs.
There are some interesting papers, but very few good teachers. Some
teachers can be very frustrating. Exams promote rote learning from
PPTs.
In spite of all these negatives, the institution still has a
reputation outside, so when I sent emails to different research
organizations for RA posts, some did reply just because I did my MA
from GIPE. I am not sure about the research opportunities after MSE.
One other thing is that GIPE is on the verge of a major make over with
new courses. The new courses have good placements for sure, but the
ordinary M.A. course is still neglected.
Hope that helped. "

i noe some of my seniors who there are in GIPE!
they aren't so pessimist about GIPE
im not sure may b staying in hostel can b a prob
but outside, pune has great pg and flat system wich one can get easily! (as i myself stayed  in pune for 3 yrs)

plus campus selections  GIPE is quite good!

i don't think GIPE has that kind of negativ atmosphere. its all..on the student who has to study!
how he takes it!!  .....

Considering this just till the other results are out ... and well covering everything ... I'd have to go with MSE...

but there is still a IF left out ... The results of MSE are STILL NOT OUT yet ...so lets see, I hope everything works out ...
