JNU SSS or IGIDR? ( for those undecided between further studies and placement)

Go for JNU, considering its intellectual atmosphere, together with a good reputation that can be useful further either for higher studies or for securing a good job, or definitely for academics

The faculty of JNU is way better than that of IGIDR. Leaving aside placement perspective, for everything else, JNU is better than IGIDR.

Igidr! Jnu ONLY if u want to do civils. Their course is too old,theoretical, teachers are not very approachable and hardly  few students get placed. On the other hand igidr has 100% placements.  Average Package almost close to dse. Small batch size. And u get a option to directly  pursue mphil. I personally know few people who have choosen igidr even above dse. So think wisely. All the best!

So i have two really close friends - One in JNU and the other in IGIDR.
And you can actually see the difference in the two.

Overall learning,grooming,personality development,intellectual atmosphere is very much important for an individual's growth. I would suggest you to go to JNU. JNU placements might not be the best but it gives two major benifits -
1) If you loved eco - you have ample amount of time to prepare for Civils, M.Phil etc
2) If you feel you have got to work - then trust me every company knows about JNU and very few know about IGIDR. (Even the Mumbai people don't know about IGIDR at times)

Hence JNU is a safe bet. MOREOVER ITS IN DELHII.

If it was JNU SSS, I would go with IGIDR.

If it was JNU SIS, I would go with JNU

Things like, staying in Delhi, getting the JNU "atmosphere", getting intellectual freedom, etc, only come into play once you are studying a course that isn't strictly dominated.

SSS is completely heterodox, you need to know that. It doesn't fall in line with graduate courses at 99% of other places, across the world

Take note of one more thing BTW (this is from a person who will enter second year of SSS later this month). Nearly all topics that have anything to do with Maths or Stats are taught by visiting faculty.

Sorry to interrupt this discussion at this point but Amalgamteking, I'm really amazed to see the confidence you exude while talking about the relative quality of the institutes! It's as if you've studied for two years each in each of them. I'm sure your judgements about these institutes come from seniors studying there, and I doubt any one of them will speak so low of JNU SSS. As far as the course structure is concerned, I don't see much of a difference in the contents of micro and macro in SSS as compared to what can be expected elsewhere (at least going by the link you sent). It might be indeed true that the course is less rigorous, but that doesn't seem to be so obvious from the prescribed textbooks, such as in Game Theory or Micro. The textbooks prescribed there (Advanced Micro by Varian, or Optimization by Dixit) are pretty mathematical and rigorous.

Second, as you said, infrastructure is not really much of a concern. DSE has much poorer infra than JNU SSS. And I fail to realize how JNU gets ranked above DU when it comes to University rankings (sometimes it's the other way around too. But it's these two that are ranked one and two), at least in terms of infrastructure.

However, I'm only saying stuff that I think is true. I'm not as confident as you are.
