Which is better in terms of course, faculty, reputation, prospects as in job/ PhD placements???

See both courses are entirely different. So first you should look for your interest and then decide. If you feel to move ahead in environmental Eco , then TERI , and if general then Ambedkar . Also , if you have any plan for IES , then env Eco will not make you eligible for that.

See.. I think, b/w AUD and TERI, TERI should be the obvious choice irrespective of whether you want to go for research or corporate. Students from TERI univ often get placed in TERI institute itself at decent salaries. Also, env. economics has a good scope in institutes like IARI.
|
But I guess IARI just has Agri economics department . Is environmental a part of it ?

Its a research instt., which works on various issues including environment, agriculture etc.

Jack could you tell me if one is eligible for IES after MA Economics with specialization in Environmental Economics from TERI?
|
See i don't think that should be a problem. Env. economics is generally treated as economics. But again, I am not sure. So pls confirm.
|
That's the whole problem..where to confirm?? I have tried to search LinkedIn profiles, dug through the IES site but to no avail..!!
|
Nupur, I know, one is eligible for UGC NET after env. eco, but not sure about IES. Why don't you speak to someone from TERI, maybe the faculty. They might help you.

That's a good idea! Can you wiegh Teri against Financial Economics from Gokhale? I know these are two completely different subjects but that's the choice right now in front of me..I have not studied anything in finance before as I have not done BA eco hons., so I'm not sure of my interest in the same. Moreover I've heard placements are not so good for financial in gipe and that only KPOs come! And being from North India, I don't know if Financial from Gokhale is reputed enough to earn me a PhD abroad?? Or even Net eligibility??
|
Its difficult to compare env eco and fin. eco. Placements for fin eco at Gokhale are decent, in fact better than ma economics. However, if you're planning to go for IES or NET, according to me, fin eco does not make much sense. Fin eco is a more market-oriented, professional course for someone who is planning to go into corporates right after masters.

But fin eco graduates earn a lot mostly

A drawback of financial Eco could be the intense competition offered by the finance management students from the numerous top MBA institutes . So go for it only and only if you have a strong yearning for that subject. Because at the end of the day your knowledge ( which is again build by your interest ) will matter the most. If you are planning for a PhD abroad , Env Eco has a very good scope outside India.

See Nupur any specialization in eco makes u eligible for IES. They all come under applied eco thing except ma in dev studies.
Env eco is really good if u want to do research in this subject aage jaake, as in, when you will make the proposal you will be well acquainted with env and stuff. Financial eco has a major disadvantage as the country is offering a better degree in the same genre: MBA Finance (as Anjali told). And dude Ambedkar is really good. I gave some 16 papers for masters. Of all 16 AUD had the best, learned, well versed, cooperative invigilators. The faculty is awesome there. Just the thing is about the peer group. I dont know what level of students take admission there. Plus dude none, I mean no gokhale, no MSE can beat what delhi offers you. |
If you compare TERI and Ambedkar , TERI is better. Also, i havent heard anything good about Ambedkar.Ambekar should be the last choice.
dONT choose finan eco if one wants to go for IES. Doesnt help much. @nupur, between teri and gokhale , you can choose either. Bt finan eco has better prospect at gipe than ma general eco. And please dont get so confused choosing abt colleges. Do what your interest is If you look at the level of colleges then 1 MSE...Placements are too good 2. gipe if for financial, general eco is not good @ashima, delhi is good bt not ahead infront of one's career. delhi is good if one gets dse or jnu or maybe jamia. Bt other institutes are not good.

I guess Ambedkar is fine. But , it's more inclined towards political economics. One of my friends studies there and she says that they actually read those huge books on Karl Marx . What we read in our 3rd year in economy , state and society subject , is taught there in magnified terms. So you have to decide that whether you are compatible with such a course structure. If its a yes , then AUD is good.
One major advantage of TERI is its foreign collaborations. Plus they have their own research centre near Lodhi Road , which is pretty much a distinguished place because of their head Dr. Pachauri. Atlast , do what you wish for. Because if you are planning for PhD , then you should have your basics right ( there is so much competition ) . @Ashima , are you sure that Env Eco makes a student eligible for IES ? Is it really a credible news ?

Applied eco is an entirely different subject which is taught in very few instts in India . Its basis is econometrics. How can Env.eco be considered applied eco. I talked to my friend whose relative teaches at TERI n even he said the same :-/ And yes she is right. Living in Delhi or Mumbai has its own perks which south might not offer, not to sound discriminatory but thats the bitter truth .
