I am a 2011 batch engineering graduate. I've spent 6 months in Investment Banking & since then it has all been giving JEE coaching to teenagers.
I've attempted the ISI/JNU/IGIDR/DSE entrances without any success for two consecutive years. I am not keen towards pursuing MBA. I am inclined towards data sciences. I am trying to learn programming languages but I seek practical advice from you guys. I am thinking of you all as career consultants. Please help!

Yr even though I am not able to clear any of the entrances that I gave as my 1st attempt.
But same Question arises with me too, whether I should really drop or not. Is its scope so much enough that dropping can really be thought of?? |

Ashish, my small advice would surely be that even if u are thinking to move towards data sciences, then don't move by thinking any negative things. It's like you would be moving because you have interest in data sciences and that MA Economics doesnot deserve your talent.👍👍 Stay Positive :-)

Hey Ashish. :)
It's fine if you haven't cleared any entrance. As you have mentioned you're interested in Data Science, start doing Analytics courses offered on Coursera or edx. Also, learn R/SAS/Python. You can become a good data scientist only when you learn concepts by doing. So, start applying for jobs in Analytics Industry to get some exposure. Companies are into hiring process these days. You can apply at Exl, Fractal Analytics, Capegemini, HSBC, TCS, Standard Chartered, Kie Square, CRISIL and many more. And if you have more interested in pursuing higher studies in Economics then keep learning, focus more on clearing your basics before jumping to advanced-topics, learn from your mistakes in last two attempts, corrct them and give your best shot next year. I am sure you would clear it. :) Thanks

Hi Ashish,
I am no career consultant but what I take from what you said is that you are trying for masters in Economics to go into analytics. As someone mentioned there are online courses, MOOCs, which can help you learn about the field. But if you are actually interested in the field, why don't you try for a degree in analytics? There are many places which are providing a degree course in analytics for example ISB, Great Lakes Institute, and many other. It will provide you with in-depth knowledge and with sole focus on analytics. I think you should give it a try if you are really keen on going in this field. All the very best! |
Thanks a lot Nishtha, Nikkita & Duck!
I like all your suggestions. The issue with me is time & money. I'm almost 28 & need to start my data science career soon. The thing about specialised data analytics courses are that they require a heavy up-front investment & opportunity cost also includes loss of salary. Plus, I wanted to take economics as it gives an aptitude to tell story with the help of numbers. I am more of a story guy who loves numbers. I love cricket not because of Tendulkar or Dhoni but because of so many statistics & graphs. There is something about graphs and those weird averages which excites me. I was always inquisitive about stock market from childhood not because I am money-minded but I loved the charts & nos. which used to come in TV & newspapers. Hence, I've burned a lot of money in stock-market because of lack of sound stock-picking skills & the attraction of graphs & breakout patterns. I'm still thinking about taking an entry level data science role and learn while on the job. However, I have messed my resume with 4 years of JEE coaching to IIT aspirants. The only silver lining is CFA Level 1 & 6 months I-banking stint. Apart from that my CV is pathetic.

I need you to contact me , you and i have so much in common my number is +918601050659 ,
for even i love to study and i still m figuring out why i did not make it . fyi : after all these hard work the break point is that i have got a back paper to give in august , :( i was doing a lot of things in april, may, june that i back paper is still acceptable. i will be eagerly waiting for your call buddy :) |
i have also done data analysis work to seek shelter from misery but halfway i kinda fell in love with it , i have done courses on coursera, mitedx, udacity and stanford online .
one reason why i still do not have a full working knowledge after all these courses is because Data analysis requires a lot juggling from graphs to hypothesis to cleaning of data upon arrival .44 so if two people do it together it is a lot easier. also i love economics and watching series such as Ancient aliens but alas life is not what you think it is don't worry about your age . once we start ( i mean both of us jointly ) we can be anchor to each other LET US WORK TOGETHER BECAUSE I THINK I CAN DO IT IF I HAVE SOMEONE TO BACK ME UP :p |
