same is my story i was tempted to do the econometrics part and landed up getting negative marks. now I finally know I am not getting anywhere. I am thinking of dropping and reappearing Because getting through CAT is tougher task With Such High cutoffs i Would rather stick to Preparations And planning to take  some kind of Certificate Course this Year.

maecon and rani verma, I had been through the same situation the previous year. I'm an engineer by profession or that's what my degree certificate tells me. I rejected a job offer which had a fairly good pay to try my luck at DSE entrance. I had been travelling across the length and breadth of India and teaching at places the entire year and 4 months back I got back home to start preparing for DSE entrance. I got 51 marks that I'm not pretty sure if I'd land at DSE. Fingers crossed. It's not the degrees and the papers that matter. Just get going, Do the thing you love for the entire year. You will never regret it.

knowpraveen , bhai the guilt is not about missing one more fancy degree from a fancy college but about not being able to enroll and further learn a subject that i have recently developed a strong affinity for . if we had a system neutral to people outside college during jobs/phds i would not be so damped right now.

the regret of i am sure most of the people is not being able to perform right when it was needed , i know few among you will say "you should prepare smartly" but the fact that i did a paper fairly good despite knowing the subject for less than 6 months puts me above average.
i just want to know some students plan ( for example Mike ) if they did not make it to finals to better gauge where i should move now .

Okay, what are your scores? Will normalization help, if at all that happens?

Bro, mera story bhi bilkul teri tarah hai yaar. I took the exam last year but the attempt was in vain, I was no where near the border even. I had to pick myself up and dust off to start another year where people would be giving us strange looks because of a detour in the career choice - from engg to economics, for not having a job, for not earning, for going to far away places and as they say running away from responsibilities et cetera. It's been one year and I'm okay with all that.

And, I'm not sure what I'd be doing this year If I don't make it this time as well.

Maecon, normalization happens every year.. Let's hope for the best. If your desire is strong enough than you'll get through for sure. I was really disappointed when I couldn't clear ISI exam although i was 100%sure. Don't be disheartened.
This time the paper was difficult. So the cutoff might be low. Don't give up. Stay positive.

knowpraveen,
Same page as you are on! And a year isn't a "waste" if you do productive things :). You gotta keep yourself busy. I took up a couple of internships, started something of my own, traveled. Looking back, it was worth it and I learnt new things :)

I faced the same problem ...last year though I cleared MSe and Hyderabad I dint wish to join either ...one year is never a waste(and moreover no one will ever ask why did u drop a year ) I did couple of internships ..lil coding stuff  I missed igidr interview call by half a mark ..and 1 mark short of JNU (SSS) that was so disheartening at that time  ..but after my experience I don't regret my decision of taking a drop ...this can be beneficial in the long run if the time is utilized judiciously....

I have a similar story to Praveen. I graduated last year with a dual degree (b. Tech and m. Tech) in chemical engineering and started a well paying job with ITC. But 2 months into the job, I started feeling a disconnect with the people around me and decided to go for a masters in econ veacuase I had done sone courses in undergrad and really enjoyed them. My friends and even parents tried to convince me of the folly I was committing. Dad said, " higher studies hi karna hai to go for an IIM". But I stuck to my decision and it has gone pretty ok till now.
I did a couple of internships in my gap year. The union govt has nice ones in the mhrd, external affairs and many others. For people plaaning a gap year this time, the internship with Delhi govt. is exciting too. A batchmate of mine has left a job with google for a 6 month intern under Manish Sisodia.

So guys, don't despair if you don't get the desired results. There are many things for you to try in your gap year
