hey guys, i made it to both ISI and DSE . But i just couldn't decide where to go. Any suggestions?
|
depends on your preferences. If its pure research, go to ISI. Remember at the same time going to ISI will narrow down your research options too. At the same time, DSE will open up all options but the faculty isnt very approachable. In ISI the student teacher ratio is very encouraging.

thanks bhavya..which institute has better on campus placements?

according to my professor.....ISI is oriented towards pure economic research.......it prepare its students to bcome phd scholars from institutions like MIT, etc.....quantitative economics as the name suggesots....its pure mathematical nd statistical.......and yes its teacher student ratio is its advantage....
on the other hand dse is oriented towards corporate world......the 'brand name' factor comes into play in case of dse...... the course structurs of both institutes are very impressive...

So, what are the chances, for someone from DSE, of getting into the top 10 US universities for Phd. ?
Also, how good is DSE in terms of research, alone(I'm not really interested in placements)? |
See in terms of campus placements, DSE is pretty good. But its all corporate and from what I've heard from most of my seniors, they were rubbed so hard for those two years that they just want a way out from studying. Which is something that Ph.D aspirants wouldn't like. You want to pursue a subject when you love it which is facilitated by the student teacher relationship. you can guess for yourself which of the two institutes is better on that. DSE is recognized globally so your chance in getting in a good phd course abroad is very good.

If I were in your place I would go with ISI. As far as I have heard that campus placements in ISI are real good, and doesn't matter much on your academics. Like say if you have a 50% in ISI which is a tougher course than the one in DSE you can still go for good PhDs and very good campus placements. Whereas in DSE if you have less than 55% aggregate (flunking there and having ERs is kind of a trend) you are in dumps. You might not even get placed, even if you are you can't be choosy. Moreover if you are also considering PhD later, getting strong letters of recommendations help you a lot in your application getting selected. Which is a lot easier in ISI as the student teacher ratio is great, so they know you well. But in DSE a lot of buttering needs to be done for that.
Just a figure for example, one of my senior in ISI had 45% and he made a job of 40lakhs INR in India. Whereas the average package of DSE is 10lakhish. So decide for yourself. Very few people have such great options. :) |

hey..
@isi course is more research oriented...i would say..do consider the fact that class size is around 15..surviving there is a big task....living in hostel..for two years ..with life surrounded by 15 friends(only if agar tumhari unke sath tuning banti hai toh).. both are equally good..in both places u hav to study.. though dse has a brand value..u get a life to live..its up to u...both are great institutions..till now toppers are joining dse only..so opting anyone is good....if u r comfortable with class size of 15 of isi then go for isi .. |

ISI and DSE both have emphasis on research. However, the environment is where each differs the most. ISI is located near the forests of the Southern part of the rich, away from the city, sheltered in it's little but sufficient campus, providing all the focus a researcher needs. The small class size as mentioned by others, makes interactions with faculty and other students almost unavoidable. The department is pretty strong in Micro economic theory, definitely comparable to departments across the world.
DSE is much more than just a school of economics. For one, it is located right in the North campus, which means you are more in touch with what's happening with the world, even if it is only as small as that of the university. You meet a wide variety of people and not just economists. The class size is massive, very often, a year is not enough to know all your classmates. The profs as far as I have seen, are as approachable as any I have seen, so I wouldn't say you can't talk to them. However, owing to several reasons, professors here don't have as much engagement with students on the research front as one would like. This is not to say MA students aren't involved in research. The interested ones are. But one needs to find ways of doing things here. It is undeniably a stimulating environment though there is not much in terms of critiquing the philosophy of what is being taught to you in class - for the exams, you need to answer the questions, not demonstrate knowledge of economics - and the presence of the sociology and geography department within the same walls is one of the best things about the place. It's got a fantastic library and a placement program that is undeniably impressive. So it's ultimately, a question of what sort of world do you want to inhabit for the next two years, because irrespective of where you go, you can get a job and/or get into a top PhD program. Long answer, but I can see no shorter way of doing this. |
Junta, any fresh opinion on ISI vs DSE ? I plan to pursue PhD after masters. Thanks

ISI definitely - better environment for honing your research interests and faculty interaction levels are very favorable for recommendations, teaching.
