In the JNU vs IGIDR debate, I am not against either of them, but even if I do clear JNU I would still choose IGIDR, because:
1. Student-teacher ratio
2. I can keep my options open to do my Ph.D or take up a job, because my long-term goals are very hazy
3. I have heard a lot about JNU's intellectual atmosphere and all that, but I think other factors like the library, resources, hostel, weather etc also matter. I would it really difficult to survive in Delhi. Just a matter of creature comforts
4. I also keep hearing these "Marxist" rumours about JNU, I don't know whether they are true, but I don't want to risk it
5. I have however heard from one of my seniors that the JNU curriculum is only good for research as it gives you plenty of time and space to do it. Freedom is a good thing, but I prefer rigour in the syllabus. I may become laidback in such an environment
6. aditi you should think it out carefully because your long term goals are pretty well-defined, so JNU could you an edge in terms of global recognition

Does anyone know how far the IGIDR wait list generally moves?
is it safe to assume that people who have made it to DSE and IGIDR would generally opt for DSE?

Please think carefully before choosing JNU over IGIDR because JNU is a left bastion especially the ma eco offered by SSS. The placement situation is not good either and if you want to know the state of affairs , you can go to jnu centre for economic studies and planning website (this is the centre which offers the ma eco course) . Their website has not been updated for years. The syllabus is not there, the course structure is also old and nobody can assure whether the same papers will be taught and many of the teachers whose names have been mentioned against the course have either retired or are on leave from the department sitting in the planning commission! And most importantly, some of the teachers in jnu value their economic ideologies more than mainstream economic theories.

I strongly agree with the last part u said. As far as placements is concerned, jnu post grads are respected in market. Go to linkedin and u will find plenty of its almuni in industry. As far as curriculum is concerned, its for sure less mathematical and unless u have a liking for theory one can avoid JNU for IGIDR. Who should choose JNU(personal opinion):

*folks with no other options(that's obvious)
*Civil Services: Its still a hot career options and if you prefer it then JNU is a must for these blokes.
*Penchant for theory but with some analysis: There are folks who don't like that much mathematics but appreciate the analysis of economic concepts.. well JNU suits them.. But, I heard from an almuni that JNU also provides mathematical subjects as optional but lack of full time faculty means the journey won't be that smooth.

Good Luck to all those who made a cut at IGIDR!
