Hey guys, I am on the first waiting list at IGIDR.. Hoping for the best. :) And I wonder when JNU will be released. If a person hypothetically has to choose between IGIDR and JNU, what would the correct choice be?

All the people I have asked from Delhi are saying JNU whereas all other people outside Delhi are saying IGIDR has better Infra, better student-teacher ratio etc. So it's not like either IGIDR or JNU are confirmed for me but I just want to know for the sake of knowing. Somewhere the impression is that IGIDR provides a good opportunity for placement whereas JNU completely shuts off that option. Honestly, I would love to go on and do a PhD if it's at all possible. But then again, I'm not dead sure. So what would you recommend based on that?

I am also from Delhi and i didn't says so. I think JNU is too cool and can be a potential distraction source for a PHD aspirant. Phd programs abroad considers what work you have done, any research potential and how much maths you know. If you don't know economics, they are ready to digest that coz they can teach you eco but they certainly won't consider teaching you maths. So, IGIDR should be your choice and moreover, it's RBI's pet. what else you want.

Hmmmm any idea if the JNU course is actually non-mathematical or is that just a cliche? Because your point about foreign universities is correct. An economics programme at masters level needs to be mathematical in order to be taken seriously by academicians especially if a PhD is to be pursued.

JNU is known for lot of things. It is known for super freedom given to students. It is known as Harvard of India. I don't think any bigger recognition can be given to JNU than that. I personally love JNU. It's the most energetic campus i have ever been to. Having said that, I like IGIDR course better than JNU though both are competent enough. And again for a Phd aspirant, what good place is for him/her than campus of central bank.
JNU course does has some lovely courses on maths. Like linear economic models, optimization theory, econometrics but IGIDR offers you more choices and can knock out JNU course any day or night. |

And i have heard JNU doesn't give a damn whether you study or not. There is lot of flexibility regarding studies and it's a great thing but can be disastrous as well. Almost every year a guy commits suicide in IIT kanpur and no wonder this campus ranks among the best. JNU campus is the loveliest of all and have a strong political environment. You can visit both campuses, it will be a nice vacation and can help you make up your mind.
