what exactly is the combined rank list all about Vandhana ? I had rank 34 in the Finanical list and now its 128 in the combined list !! What does it signify ?

i have been ranked 11th in the MSE's merit list........i m still in dilemma whether should i go for it or not...

and which course i should go for........M.sc(acturial economics) or Quantitative finance (i am a delhi university's B.com(H))

Hey Avipsa,

I know right? I was pretty upset about the combined rank list. 151 :( I don't know what the implications of this is going to be. Moreover, they are giving the option to people with better ranks to choose which ever course they want! I don't understand the point of us putting preferences then! :/

Let's see. Still coming on 6th? I am in Chennai, so yeah it's just the matter of going to the campus. Also did you write the 29th ka paper?

No i didnt write the 29th ka paper !!!

and what i understand from the instructions is that you will be offered any one of the two if you have applied for the two !!! One who hasnt applied for fin. will not be offered that !! I had applied for both. What about you ?

I applied for both as well but I am not sure that my rank is all that good for me to  be  able to choose one out of the two courses. I am saying this because they specifically mentioned that people with higher ranks will be allowed to choose and all.

 am rly confused b/w financial eco and quantitative eco.
wHICH ONE SHOULD I OPT FOR..?
fOR ACTURIL ECO , I THINK THe companies would rather prefer actuaries than us.

Hey, the thing is that if you do acturial eco, I don't think you should stop right there, you should probably do the acturial certification thing as well. Both the certificate course and the masters degree will complement each other and it will be such a good value addition. Just like how if you do CFA or something along with your Financial Economics/Quant Finance course.

I am not very sure but it is around 10-15 kms from the airport. It is not difficult to find the way because MSE is right behind this hugeeeee structure called the Centenary Library!

Thanks a lot Neemrana. I dont think I am much interested in doing acturial. though i have considered CFA as a good opt6ion. If u know , can you please tell me the broad diff b/w financial eco and applied quantitative finance?
And one more doubt that i have, when companies upload their qualificatiions for recruitment, they never i guess askl for quantitative finance, its always m.a eco that they ask for.

i am really cnfsd bcz i dont really know exactly where my interst lies, finance is my pick or not.

Hey Smriti,
I am very keen on doing either Financial Economics or Quant Finance. I am not very keen on doing General Economics course. SO even I am trying to see what is the big difference between the two. You can't even say Quant Finance is going to be more maths based or anything because Finance economics is also going to be heavy with maths and econometrics. So I am trying to go over the curriculum of the two courses to see the nuances of the two courses. Personally, I feel financial economics should be a little bit better mainly because it has been offered by MSE for a loooong time now but that's not the case with quant finance.

That is something you have to see for yourself, whether finance is your pick or not. I have been heavily interested in this field so MSE and GIPE were of paramount importance to me. Just a heads up though, it is one of the most lucrative and interesting fields to be associated with! ;-)

Thanks a lot Neemrana. You reply was a great help. I talked to one of financial eco ki student. She said faculty is not good  but then the 'brand name'. I gues i wl go fr financial eco fr nw, (if i get it :p) and then choosing b/w pg and hostel would be a call.

I am glad I could help! :-) After school, teachers never teach you anyway! :p MSE is soo much better than many colleges and is known for it's good placements. Yeah same here, I am also leaning towards Fin Eco over Quant Fin. I went to their hostel even, it's pretty decent. Sure, if I find out something, I'll let you know :-)
